Here's our philosophy on how to actually get prepared without losing your mind (or your money).
We've developed four approaches to prepping. Most people use ALL FOUR depending on the situation.
🛋️ LazyPrep™ — "Just Buy It. Done."
Your time is worth $300/hour. Why would you spend 10 hours to save $50? That's not frugal. That's bad math.
LazyPrep™ is sitting on your couch at 9pm, realizing you need water storage, and having 100 gallons ordered before your show comes back from commercial.
When to use it: Urgent needs, just plain decision fatigue, small purchases where savings aren't worth the effort, or when you just want it DONE. Sometimes shopping stress is just not worth it.
Your PJs. Your coffee. Your couch. Prepared by Tuesday.
💡 SmartPrep™ — "Easy Wins, Real Savings"
Your time is valuable, but 30 seconds to save $30 or more? That math works. Quick and rapid wins for savings. If it takes much more effort, it's just not worth it. Be smart with your time AND money.
The tactics:
- CamelCamelCamel price alerts — set it and forget it, buy when it pings you
- Black Friday timing — this isn't for fighting crowds, it's for clicking "buy" at 30% off
- Subscribe & Save — 5-15% off with zero effort
- Buy the bundle — often 10-25% savings
- Follow the advice (from us) and catch great sales
- Quick coupon code search — 30 seconds, real money back
When to use it: Major purchases ($800+), known sale periods coming up, items you don't need immediately.
🔧 DIYPrep™ — "Worth Making Yourself"
Some things are worth doing yourself. Not because you have to but because you WANT to — and the savings are real.
The prime example:
- Pre-packaged emergency food: $5-8/serving
- DIY bulk storage: $0.50-1.00/serving
- Savings: 80%+
But here's the thing: There's ALWAYS a LazyPrep™ alternative. DIYPrep™ is an OPTION, not a requirement.
Don't want to DIY? Don't. Hire that plumber. Buy that pre-packaged item. We trust electrical and plumbing to experts. Need that solar roof? Pro installation is key.
My wife thinks freeze-drying is therapy. I think it's a chore. We have a housekeeper who helps with it. No shame in that.
🕵️ SneakyPrepping™ — "Prepare Them Without the Lecture"
Getting non-preppers prepared without them knowing.
The problem: Spouse rolls eyes at "prepping." Family thinks you're paranoid. You want to protect people who resist.
The solution — reframe everything:
- Bug-out bag → "Car emergency kit for your teenager or spouse"
- Power station → "Camping/tailgating battery for the weekend game guy"
- Water filter → "Hiking gear for your adventurer"
- Solar oven → "For the beach/camping for the picnic"
- French press → "Artisan coffee for the aficionado" (also: coffee when the power's out)
Your spouse thinks the power station is for tailgating. He's not wrong. He's just not completely right either.
How They All Connect
Need something for preparedness?
- Is it urgent? → LazyPrep™ (just buy it)
- Not urgent? Can you save $50+ with minimal effort? → SmartPrep™
- Is there a DIY option with $100+ savings AND you actually want to do it and have the TIME? → DIYPrep™
- None of the above? → LazyPrep™ (the default)
- Is family resistant? → SneakyPrepping™ (reframe everything)
Most people use ALL FOUR:
- LazyPrep™ for most purchases (efficiency)
- SmartPrep™ for big-ticket items (smart savings)
- DIYPrep™ for hobby items they enjoy (fun + savings)
- SneakyPrepping™ for resistant family members (peace)
